Having just graduated from college, Nethra thrills to work as a software engineer in her first job. She has always been a good student; she is certain about the skills needed on that post. Although she was new to the profession, after several weeks of working, it soon became apparent there is much more than technical skills in her vocation. However, she was failing to accomplish different things because of ineffective cooperative and leadership skills. Her manager called her aside one day and informed he that indeed she was a good asset to the team however, there was something with communication. Although Nethra later became accustomed to the necessary skills, this is what you should know about soft skills.

The many non-technical traits of an individual that promote their career and development in life are referred to as soft skills. The key characteristics of effective soft skill sets include emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. A good soft skill person is one who can be able to communicate well, work as part of a team and have the capacity understands others. Some important ones are:

  1. Teamwork
  2. Leadership
  3. Communication
  4. Creativity
  5. Crisis Management
  6. Conflict resolution
  7. Work ethic and time management

Some methods that will help to incorporate these abilities into your working style are attending online courses, reading books and blogs posts, watching people who you think could be role models for the same reason in their behavior as yours is another method of learning by personal experience. Furthermore, these abilities are continually improving and mastering, sometimes even occurring unconsciously and without your notice. Other than soft skills, some key traits that every individual should display are empathy, ability to handle feedback gracefully and reliability among others. Much better is the individual who can be friendly and sociable.

So, the crucial question now is how to incorporate soft skills into a resume.

  • Try to input your skills from the bulleted list in the “Skills” section and add a small description or an example how you have used these qualities.
  • After going over the job description, list several skills which are relevant to mention. This will make your resume stand out to applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  • Ensure that you provide effective summaries as opposed to long explanations.

Though there are many soft skills that can be mastered, beginning with these should help you to take the first essential steps on your self-development path. Soft-skill can be acquired throughout one’s lifetime as every day becomes an opportunity to learn. What’s important is to observe, understand and then adapt.
